This award-winning architectural gem is teeming with eco-sustainability features. The design concept takes full advantage of its hugging green environment, incorporating recycled timber, adjustable louvred breathing walls, “jendela” windows, stacked roof with wide eaves, lifted off the ground, semi-outdoor bathrooms, a tubewell, rainwater harvesting, and the most celebrated feature of them all, a 16'-square-foot plunge pool in the middle of the house. Built with timber, it adopted the traditional “tanggam” building techniques, yet the plan of the house was catered to current living patterns, where the public spaces are open-planned and centred around the kitchen. The planting of timber trees and heritage plants, along with breeding livestock, contributes to the autonomous nature of the retreat.

FENG SHUI HOUSE

Location     : Sierramas Resort Homes,

                  Sungai Buloh, Selangor

Value         : RM 1.5 million

Completion : June 1998

The philosophy of Feng Shui played a pivotal role in the design of the house. The placement of various spaces was determined based on the 'Flying Star' chart. The masterpiece would be the double-volume entry foyer overlooking the courtyard, where an overhead bridge stands out in contrast to the fully-glazed background. Taking advantage of the semi-enclosed courtyard, a series of external decks with pergolas were arranged within clusters of green perennials and lush 'Paku Gajah' ferns. The earthy finishes of terracotta and washed pebbles, along with timber windows, shuttered doors, and balustrades, provide a striking contrast with the verdant surroundings.
